Nancy Rousseau gets to grips with a funky, eco-friendly hemp laptop bag from SativaBags
There's something undeniably cool about a hemp laptop bag, as I discovered recently when the kind folks at Sativa Bags sent one of their new range for me to have a look at.
As a material, hemp has a simple, uncomplicated quality that is at odds with all the modern technology we tote around. It feels strangely comforting to carry something that's not plastic, vinyl, nylon or in any way man-made. Cannabis sativa is organically grown and classed as an envionmentally-friendly crop due to its rapid cultivation and minimal waste, which means that you can get yourself a cool bag and do your bit for the environment too.
Add to that the fact that these are well-designed, funky-looking bags and with a price tag within the range of all but the most poverty-stricken student and you have a product that will give you the biggest legal high in the laptop bag buying world!
Well overall it's a well thought-out, practical bag, fairly well-padded (more than a messenger but less than a travel bag) with some innovative little features that set it apart from its high street counterparts.
I particularly liked the magnetic press stud fastenings which work a bit like a popper but without the fiddlyness (is that a word?!) and another innovative feature is the mobile phone pocket which features a tailored length of lining fabric which allows you to retrieve your phone without having to dig around in the pocket, you simply pull on the tab at the top which pops your mobile out for you. You can watch a video of this in action on the Sativa website.
The central laptop compartment has a padded divider with a wrap-over velcro tab to keep your laptop in place on one side and stitched pockets on the other for power supply and other accessories. The front zipped compartment has tailored pen-holders, business card pockets and a further zip pocket. At the rear of the bag are a further two pockets for documents and also the mobile phone pocket I mentioned. Another added feature is the carabine for keys nicely integrated into the back pocket.
The interior of the bag is fully lined with printed fabric and the detail extends to the lockable zip pullers. The model shown here fits laptops up to 17inch, however there are several other similar bags which cater to the 15inch and smaller notebooks.
Fantastic bag, high build quality, low ecological impact, looks and feels gorgeous.
Sativa Bags are very reasonably priced considering their high build quality. The S10075 reviewed here costs £ 56.99. Other bags including rucksacks are available and start around £ 30.00
